A traffic stop conducted by Canton Police Department officers along Interstate 20 last week proved to be anything but routine, uncovering $27,000 in cash and a kilogram of cocaine. According to reports, officers with the Canton PD stopped a vehicle passing through the area for multiple traffic violations, including driving in the left lane without passing and an expired vehicle registration. Officers subsequently called for and received assistance from the Wills Point’s K9 unit, which hit upon the drugs hidden in the vehicle. Further details about the ongoing investigation were not immediately available as of press time.

90-day burn ban in effect

In a unanimous vote, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court implemented a 90-day burn ban for VZC, effective immediately, during their regular meeting June 22. The 90-day burn ban proclamation, known as an ‘Order Prohibiting the Outdoor Burning of Combustible Materials’ was approved by the court following a presentation by VZC Fire Marshal Sean Davis.

Likelihood of heat stroke, death rises with temperatures

Each year, children get heat stroke or die from being left unattended in a hot car, but a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service passenger safety expert says there are ways to avoid tragedy. Bev Kellner, AgriLife Extension traffic safety project director, said as temperatures increase, so does the likelihood of heat stroke and death for children left alone in a vehicle.

Canton Police Dept. Officers involved in hot pursuit, investigate fire

Canton Police Department officers were involved in a hot pursuit through Canton on Saturday, June 18, leading to the arrest of Michael Tuff with charges of evading arrest or detention in a motor vehicle, a third-degree felony. According to the affidavit released by the department, officers were alerted that a stolen vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 20, passing the 514-mile marker. As the vehicle approached the 530-mile marker CPD officers got behind the vehicle and activated emergency equipment and the stolen truck pulled over to the shoulders if he was going to stop. Officers observed an object fly from inside the vehicle out the passenger window into the grass just before the guardrail under FM 1255. Officers advised dispatch that something was thrown from the vehicle and then it merged back onto interstate 20 and accelerated away from officers.

Gas prices remain high

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1 cent per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.64/g June 20, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 35.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.89/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 2.6 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.80 per gallon.

Terrell PD arrests bank robbery suspect

A would-be bank robber was arrested and taken into custody without incident June 16 thanks in large part to the efforts of an off-duty Terrell Police Department officer. According to a narrative of the incident released by the police department the following day, “An off-duty Police Lieutenant thwarted a robbery attempt at a local bank in the 2400 block of West Moore Avenue (USHWY80).
