Missed opportunities prove costly in 34-14 loss

The Wills Point Tigers faced a tall task during their third game of the 2017 season, taking on defending District 3A State Champion Mineola in non-district play Sept. 15. The Yellowjackets would come out of the contest victorious, capitalizing on turnovers and missed opportunities by the Tigers in the second half to pull away for a 34-14 win.

Mineola began play on offense, picking up just three yards on three plays before being forced to punt the ball back to the Tigers.

Wills Point fared much better on its first drive of the game, easily marching down the field in 11 plays for their first points of the night.

The drive began with Vernon Morrow picking up a combined 12 yards on two carries followed by a seven-yard completion from Tyler James to Morrow to push the ball into Mineola territory.

A big run by Brandon Smith, followed by completions to Seth Wilson, Demontre Hill and Nathan Johnson moved the ball down to the Yellowjacket 7-yard line.

After a five-yard penalty on first down, Brandon Smith broke through the Mineola defense for a Tiger touchdown. Aidan Phillips added the PAT, giving Wills Point a 7-0 lead with 6:10 to play in the first quarter.
