Opening scrimmage set for Saturday

After a week of going through drills and running plays against each other, the Wills Point Tigers will finally get their chance to take out their frustrations on an opponent not dressed in blue and white on Saturday.

Wills Point, coming off a 5-6 season that saw them reach the bi-district round of the playoffs, will scrimmage the District 5-4A Division II Bullard Panthers on Saturday. Freshman are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the JV and varsity scrimmaging at 9:30 a.m.

Bullard enters the season as the presumptive second seed in their district according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, behind the defending 4A State Champion Gilmer Buckeyes and several spots ahead of Wills Point rival Canton.

The Panthers will enter the game expecting to get the ball to big play receiving threat Major Tennison, a 6’6” target that hauled in 24 catches for 453 yards and six touchdowns last season, and Chris Bradford, who picked up 720 yards and 10 touchdowns on 130 carries.

Defensively, the Bullard linebacker corps consisting of Mikah Hughes, Brooks Parham and Jake Johnson should provide the Tiger offense with a tough test.

Following the scrimmage against the Panthers, Wills Point will have one more warm up against Community at home before officially starting their season at home against Forney on Aug. 28.

Wills Point will also be home against Ferris on Sept. 4 before traveling to take on Dallas Hutchins on Sept. 11. District play for the Tigers begins on Oct. 9.
