Tigers tame Panthers in 20-7 win

The Wills Point Tigers picked up their first win of the season Sept. 14 in Mabank, evening their season record at 1-1 courtesy of a strong defensive performance in a 20-7 win over the Panthers.

Wills Point opened play on offense, marching quickly form their own 39-yard line into Mabank territory on runs by Demontre Hill and Stephon Bradley. The drive would be derailed after just five plays due to an untimely penalty and a drive ending fumble recovered by the Panthers.

Lady Tigers wrap up non-district play

The Wills Point Lady Tigers will enter tonight's (Sept. 21) district opener on a high note, wrapping up non-district play earlier this week with a three-set sweep of the visiting Rains Lady Cats Sept. 18.

Wills Point and Rains had been familiar foes during previous seasons, competing against one another during district play in each of the past two seasons. The Lady Cats came away victorious in every meeting en route to back-to-back district championships.

Tigers, Vandals participate in post-scrimmage prayer

 

Pre-season football scrimmages normally are not very newsworthy but what happened following the Aug. 17 scrimmage at Van’s Memorial Stadium between two Van Zandt County rivals, the Wills Point Tigers and the Van Vandals, has drawn quite a bit of positive feedback.

After the two teams went through the normal handshake line, all of the coaches and players from both teams formed a circle around midfield and knelt and prayed together.

Lady Tigers down Caddo Mills in four

The Wills Point Lady Tigers scored an impressive four-set win over Caddo Mills on the road Aug. 21.

 

 

 

The Wills Point Lady Tigers stayed close to home Aug. 17-18, welcoming 15 other programs to town to compete at this year's Hardman-Watson Invitational Tournament.

The Tigers hit the court three times on the first day of the tournament for pool play, going 2-1 overall with wins over both Grand Saline and Cross Roads and a three-set loss to Greenville.

Cross country to compete at Commerce Meet

The Wills Point Tiger Cross Country program will open its 2018 season when they compete in Commerce Aug. 25. The Tigers are coming off a season in which they won district championships in three divisions, including the varsity girls, JV boys and JV girls classifications.

 

 

The Wills Point Tiger cross country team will get back to work this week, looking to follow up a stellar 2017 season that saw the team win three district titles (varsity girls, JV girls, JV boys) while also advancing two teams, the varsity girls and varsity boys, to race at the Regional Meet.

The Wills Point athletic program wrapped up its summer workload this week with the annual Tiger Football Camp July 30 - Aug. 2. Previous athletic camps included boys and girls basketball, tennis, baseball, softball and volleyball.

Track qualifies 12 for Regional Meet

Shelbi Walser moved one step closer to qualifying for her fourth consecutive State Track and Field Meet appearance last week, placing first overall in both the 100 meter wheelchair race and the seated shot put at the Area Meet April 19.


 

Canton, Van and Wills Point track and field athletes found themselves in a familiar place last week, returning to Rains High School April 19 for the Area Track Meet just a week after visiting the same venue for the District 13-4A Track Meet.

Individual varsity girls results included:

-100: Brianisha Rolling, Canton, third; Kaylynn Thornton, Van, fifth

Tigers close out regular season play

Noah Metcalf was one of two Tiger seniors recognized prior to play against the Rains Wildcats.

 

 

 

The Wills Point Tigers found themselves in a holding pattern following the conclusion of district play April 24, tied with two other teams for the final two playoffs spots to come out of District 13-4A.

Wills Point opened its week at home, rallying back from deficits of 1-0 and 4-1 to record a 9-4 win over the Rains Wildcats April 20.

Six headed to State Tennis Tournament

Maddie Booth, Claire Hiler, Hope Turner, Jack Johns, Chase Daniell and Kash Adams will represent the Tiger tennis program at this year's 4A State Tennis Tournament.

 

 

The Tiger tennis team reached another milestone at the Regional Tennis Tournament in Longview April 19-20, qualifying a school-record six players to compete at the 4A State Tennis Tournament May 17-18.

Players qualifying for the State Tournament included the boys doubles team of Kash Adams and Chase Daniell, the girls doubles team of Claire Hiler and Maddie Booth and the mixed doubles team of Jack Johns and Hope Turner.

Three named to All-District teams

 

District 13-4A girls basketball coaches held their yearly postseason meeting last week, wrapping up the final piece of business for the 2017-'18 season by selecting Superlative and All-District honorees. Not surprisingly Canton, the runaway winner of District 13-4A with a perfect 10-0 record, took home four out of six possible Superlative recognitions including Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Wills Point, which finished the 2017-'18 season outside of the playoff picture, had one player earn Second Team All-District honors and two more earn Honorable Mention All-District honors for their play.

Superlative honors included:

-MVP: Kenley Nixon, Canton

-Offensive Player of the Year: Chanlee Oakes, Rains

-Defensive Player of the Year: Hannah Manry, Canton

-Newcomer of the Year: Skylar Savage, Van

-Sixth Man of the Year: Olivia Norrell, Canton
