Three named to All-District teams


District 13-4A girls basketball coaches held their yearly postseason meeting last week, wrapping up the final piece of business for the 2017-'18 season by selecting Superlative and All-District honorees. Not surprisingly Canton, the runaway winner of District 13-4A with a perfect 10-0 record, took home four out of six possible Superlative recognitions including Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Wills Point, which finished the 2017-'18 season outside of the playoff picture, had one player earn Second Team All-District honors and two more earn Honorable Mention All-District honors for their play.

Superlative honors included:

-MVP: Kenley Nixon, Canton

-Offensive Player of the Year: Chanlee Oakes, Rains

-Defensive Player of the Year: Hannah Manry, Canton

-Newcomer of the Year: Skylar Savage, Van

-Sixth Man of the Year: Olivia Norrell, Canton


Powerlifters compete Commerce event



Wills Point Tiger boys and girls powerlifters traveled to Commerce Feb. 16-17 to compete in this year's Raising the Bar Invitational. Each team performed well at the event with the varsity boys team finishing fourth overall out of 16 competing teams and the varsity girls team placing sixth out of 18 competing teams.

Individual boys results included:

-132 lb. weight class: Austin Caldwell, second place, 945 lbs. lifted

-148 lb. weight class: Nolan Knisley, bombed out

-181 lb. weight class: Josh Hull, second place, 1150 lbs. lifted

-242 lb. weight class: Juan Martinez, third place, 1205 lbs. lifted

-275 lb. weight class: Cammeron Penney, sixth place, 1145 lbs. lifted; Jacob Gonzales, seventh place, 1120 lbs. lifted

Boys lifters will compete again at the Regional Powerlifting Meet in Malakoff March 2.

Tennis team places fourth at tournament


The Tiger tennis team made their way to Tyler Feb. 16, competing against 15 other schools in this year’s Tyler Lee Tennis Tournament. Out of 16 schools, mostly consisting of 5A and 6A teams, Wills Point placed fourth overall. Coach Ann Daniell stated, “We couldn't be more proud of our kids and they way they competed.”

Host Tyler Lee finished first with 143 points, followed by Longview with 127 points, Garland Sachse with 124 points, Wills Point with 97 points, JJ Pearce with 84 points, Lindale with 83 points and Kilgore with 81 points.

Medalists for Wills Point included: Maddie Booth/Claire Hiler, first place, girls A doubles; Hannah Gern/Maddie Hiler, first place, girls B doubles; Chase Daniell/Kash Adams, fourth place, boys A doubles; Hope Turner/Jack Johns, consolation, mixed A doubles; Marisa LaJone/Jacob Sanford, fourth place, mixed B doubles; and Aidan Phillips, fourth place, boys B singles.


Lady Tigers nearing end of 2017-’18 season

The Wills Point Lady Tigers crossed paths with a familiar foe Jan. 26, taking on county rival Van for the second time during the district portion of the calendar.

Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, play between the two teams would mirror their first matchup back on Jan. 9 (a 56-30 win by Van) with the Lady Vandals securing a 61-31 win against Wills Point.

Wills Point would keep things competitive during the first quarter as Van built a modest 14-8 lead on the visiting Lady Tigers. The margin would widen throughout the rest of the second and third quarters as Van outscored the Lady Tigers 19-7 in the second and 21-9 in the third to build up a 54-24 lead heading into the final quarter.

Wills Point regained its defensive footing down the stretch, playing Van to a 7-7 draw over the final eight minutes to close out the 61-31 loss.


Lady Tigers to host annual Basketball Classic

After a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Wills Point Lady Tigers return to action this week welcoming 11 other schools to town for the annual Lady Tigers Basketball Classics Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

Participating teams are scheduled to include Community, Dallas Life, Edgewood, Forney, Heritage, Kaufman, Kemp, Paschal, Poetry Christian, Quinlan and TCA.

Wills Point was set to open tournament play at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30 against Poetry Christian. . With a win, the Lady Tigers would advance to play the winner of the game between Quinlan and Paschal today (Dec. 1) for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.

A loss against Poetry Christian would move the Lady Tigers to the consolation portion of the bracket for a 3 p.m. tip-off against the loser of Quinlan-Paschal.

Other upcoming dates for the Lady Tigers are set to include a road trip to Eustace Dec. 5 and an appearance at the annual Edgewood Tournament Dec. 7-9.


Tigers among Edgewood Tournament participants

The Wills Point Tigers are scheduled to stay close to home this weekend, joining 11 other area schools at this year's Jack Shellnutt Edgewood Invitational Tournament Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

The varsity bracket will be separated into four separate pools, including Wills Point, tournament host Edgewood and Bullard scheduled to participate in Pool A.

Wills Point was scheduled to take the court each day of the tournament, opening up play beginning at 1:15 Nov. 30 against the Bulldogs. The Tigers will also be in action Dec. 1, participating in the third game of the day when they take on Bullard beginning at 11:50 a.m.

Teams that finish first overall in their respective pool will compete in the Gold Bracket Dec. 2, while teams finishing second will compete in the Silver Bracket and teams finishing third competing in the Bronze Bracket.


Tiger win sets up district title showdown

The Wills Point Tigers extended their District 6-4A winning streak to nine consecutive games on Friday night, knocking off preseason favorite Dallas Lincoln 39-20 to improve their record to 5-4 overall including a perfect 4-0 in district play heading into the final night of the regular season.

The win by Wills Point, coupled with a win by Ferris over Dallas Roosevelt the same night, sets up an intriguing final night to District 6-4A play with the winner of the game between the Tigers and Yellowjackets taking home this year’s district championship.

Wills Point won the turnover battle against Lincoln, capitalizing on a pair of miscues en route to their fifth consecutive win following an 0-4 play.


Tiger tennis team finishes third at State

The Wills Point Tiger tennis team continued to add milestones to its resume last week, capping the fall team tennis portion of the season by finishing third overall at the 4A UIL State Tennis Tournament in College Station Nov. 1-2.

Wills Point fought down to the wire, falling 10-4 to eventual runner-up Feredericksburg. The Tiger tennis program finishes the fall season with a sterling 16-3 record overall.

-Josh Schreffler/Austin Etheridge lost to Blake Boubel/Thomas Wainwright, 6-3, 0-6, 8-10


Lady Tigers edged out in Regional Quarterfinals

The Wills Point Lady Tigers endured plenty of ups and downs throughout the 2017 season, overcoming a woeful 0-4 start to district play to fight their way back into playoff contention with the regular season winding down.

Despite some bouts of inconsistency along the way, Wills Point saved its best volleyball of the season during the final weeks of October and first week of November, opening their playoff run with a thrilling five-set win over Paris during the bi-district round of the playoffs back on Oct. 30.

Wills Point continued their steallar close to the season last week, hitting the court two more times en route to the program’s first Regional Quarterfinal round appearance since the 2001 season.

The Lady Tigers began their week by traveling to Lindale Nov. 4, rallying from a two-sets-to-none deficit to score a 15-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23, 15-9 win over the Gilmer Buckeyes.


Tiger pride

Wills Point High School won the "Spirit Ball" award sponsored by Mineola radio station KMOO (99.9 FM). The announcement was made prior to kick off last Friday night between the Wills Point Tigers and Dallas Lincoln. As part of the award, the WPHS Athletic Booster Club was presented a check for $100 from City Barber Shop in Wills Point, the sponsor of the award. Shown are Danny LaJone with the WPHS Athletic Booster Club, Tiger football players Bryan Mitchell and Brandon Smith, Stan Brown of the City Barber Shop, WP Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Greg Cranfill, Jeff White of KMOO, and football players Tyler James and Jacob Moore. The award is announced on KMOO's Friday Night Live following each football broadcast and is based on the number of callers supporting their schools.
