WP grads receive degrees

The University of Texas at Tyler held fall 2015 commencement ceremonies Dec. 11 and 12, President Rodney H. Mabry announced.   There was 1,169 graduate receiving degrees.

Dr. James Nelson, UT Tyler College of Engineering dean, served as the commencement speaker for all four ceremonies.  President Mabry gave remarks and conferred degrees. Presentation and certification of master’s, baccalaureate and doctoral degree candidates were made by the deans of each of the university’s colleges.

Superheroes

Students at Wills Point High School put their efforts behind a great cause Dec. 4, wearing superhero T-shirts and donating funds to show their support for an initiative that helps purchase super hero capes for terminal and sick children. Organizers behind the initiative said that the “the purchased capes allow the sick children to feel like a superhero.”

Students participate in Sweets for Soldiers campaign

Earnest O. Woods Intermediate School student Presley Mixon is congratulated by Dr. Kimberly Neiman, DDS and Mayor Pro Tem Mike Jones for donating the most candy during the 5th annual Sweets for Soldiers campaign to show appreciation to our men and women in military service.

For the fifth consecutive year, Dr. Kimberly Neiman, DDS of Wills Point and students from the Wills Point ISD combined their efforts to collect candy for the Sweets for Soldiers campaign.

Neiman announced that this year’s total candy collected weighed in at a whopping 177.40 lbs. Neiman noted, “That’s like a whole person in candy!” Additionally, letters from Wills Point school kids from every campus were collected in appreciation of the troops.

Winning the overall class challenge this year, which included a prize of Sonic gift cards presented by Dr. Neiman, were students in Chasity Mixon’s 3rd grade class at Earnest O. Woods Intermediate School.

Book fair coming to WPMS

Wills Point Middle School students Angelina Fields, Collin Simpson and Alex Jacobs look over a poster advertising the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair.The book fair will be in the WPMS library Nov. 30-Dec. 4, and parents are welcome to come in anytime during the school day before 2:30 p.m., organizers said.

On Dec. 3, the book fair will be open during the STAAR Parent Night from 5 to 7:15 p.m. so parents can come in and shop.

Rebecca Rowe of Wills Point was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Rowe was initiated at Kansas State University.
