Reading to succeed

Wills Point Middle School students Devin Asher, Sebastian King and Jacob Stanbrough review a poster advertising the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair to be held Nov. 28-Dec. 2. The book fair will be in the Middle School Library, and parents are welcome to come in anytime during the school day before 2:40 p.m. On Tuesday, November 29, the book fair will be open until 6 p.m. so parents can come in and shop.  Proceeds from the fair are used to purchase more books and also to help fund Accelerated Reading reward incentives. Cash, checks, or credit cards will be accepted. There is a book fair link on the Middle School website for more information about books and online shopping opportunities.

Students participate in Sweets for Soldiers campaign

Dr. Kimberly Neiman presented prizes to Mrs. Yarbrough’s kindergarten class after they collected more candy than any other class within the Wills Point ISD during this year’s Sweets for Soldiers campaign. Additionally, Kensli Timmons was awarded a special prize for making the largest individual donation. 

For the sixth consecutive year, Dr. Kimberly Neiman, DDS of Wills Point and students from the Wills Point ISD combined their efforts to collect candy for the Sweets for Soldiers campaign.

Winning the overall class challenge this year, which included a prize of Sonic gift cards presented by Dr. Neiman, were students in Mrs. Mary Yarbrough’s kindergarten class at Wills Point Primary.

Kensli Timmons, a student in Mrs. Yarbrough’s class, was presented with a $50 gift card by Dr. Neiman for making the largest individual donation this year.

Prizes were presented to Mrs. Yarbrough’s class Veterans Day (Nov. 11) with Wills Point Mayor Mark Turner taking time out to recognize the students.

WPYSA Cheerleaders

The Wills Point Youth Sports Association hosted teams representing eight cities, Eustace, Kemp, Quinlan, Royse City, Crandall, Kaufman, Mabank and Wills Point, for the 2016 Tri-County Cheer and Dance Competition. The WP Midget Cheerleaders, consisting of kids ranging in age from kindergarten to second grade, finished as big winners of the event by winning Grand Champion honors.

Clark Wamre 

Oklahoma State University

 

Clark Wamre of Dallas recently graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration Management. While at OSU, he worked for the university’s athletic department and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity.  He interned with Sirius XM Radio, the Washington Redskins and the Texas Rangers. Following graduation, he continues to reside in Oklahoma where he works for NBA’s Oklahoma City  Thunder in sales and marketing.

He is the son of Sally and Rick Wamre of Dallas; the grandson of Emily Hollandsworth of Dallas, formerly of Wills Point and the late Frank Hollandsworth, and LaVonne and Jerome  Wamre of Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Theater Department trunk or treat deadline approaching

The WPHS Theater Department is putting the final touches on a new Halloween event, planning their first ever Trunk or Treat event to be held at the high school parking lot Oct. 22 from 6-9 p.m.

Organizers behind the event advised the community to “Get your costume on and come join the fun! All clubs, Organizations and local businesses are welcome to enter their ‘Trunk.’ This year’s theme is The Nightmare Before Christmas and festivities are targeted for kids up to 12 years old.”

The deadline to enter has been set for Thursday, Oct. 19.

WPMS receives $2K grant

On Sept. 20, the TVEC Charitable Foundation awarded a grant in the amount of $2,000 to the Wills Point Middle School.

“Currently, 13 students at the Wills Point Middle School participate in the backpack program. We send them home with food over the weekends, holidays, as well as extended breaks. We would like to give TVEC a big than you for giving back to our community and to these children who are in need,” WPMS officials said.

The TVEC Charitable Foundation is funded by donations from Operation Round Up. Operation Round Up is a voluntary program that allows TVEC members to round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar amount. The portion that is rounded up goes to the TVEC Charitable Foundation and may be used to award grant requests to local charitable organizations.
