Offense struggles in 12-1 loss to Eaglettes

Junior Kaylie Willis reached base via a walk, stole a base and scored the lone Lady Tiger run in Wills Point’s game against Canton March 25.

The Wills Point Lady Tigers hit another stumbling block in District 14-4A play last week, falling to 0-3 overall in a 12-1 home loss to the rival Canton Eaglettes March 25.

Canton got off to an impressive start in the contest, plating five runs in the top of the first inning to jump start their five-inning win over the Lady Tigers.

The Eaglettes loaded the bases with no outs in the frame before Sam Neal singled in two with a sharp single to leftfield. Gracie Chavez followed with another single, loading the bases once again to set up an even bigger inning.

Canton added runs on a sacrifice fly by Reagan Busby and an RBI double by Grayson Reid before the close of the inning for the 5-0 lead over Wills Point.

The lead continued to grow in the second inning, with Canton adding two more runs on a passed ball and an RBI single by Gracie Chavez.

Already well in control, the Eaglettes added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, and four more runs in the top of the fifth to run rule the Lady Tigers.

Wills Point got its lone run of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting things off with a Kaylie Willis walk. Willis stole second during the ensuing at bat, eventually coming home on an Eaglette fielding error.

Jenna Stanley picked up the win for Canton, allowing no hits and no earned runs in four innings of work. The Eaglette senior struck out six Lady Tigers batters while allowing just one unearned run. Stanley also finished 3/4 at the plate, adding an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Taylor Durham pitched one inning in relief, striking out two Lady Tiger hitters while allowing just one hit.

Other leading hitters for the Eaglettes included Gracie Chavez going 2/3 with an RBI, Kylie Floyd going 1/1 with three runs scored, Sam Neal going 1/4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored, and Grayson Reid going 1/2 with a double and an RBI.

Upcoming games for the Eaglettes include a road trip to Van April 1, followed by back-to-back home games against Rains April 5 and Wills Point April 12.

Wills Point finished its night with one hit, a Sierra Spindle single. Kaylie Willis, who picked up the lone Lady Tiger walk, also scored a run.

Wills Point is scheduled to travel to Brownsboro April 1 and to Van April 5. The next home game for the team will be April 8 against state-ranked Emory Rains.
