Wills Point History: Friday, July 22, 1949

The initial step needed to complete highway No. 243 from Canton to Kaufman was taken this week by the Highway Commission in Austin when it authorized construction of grading and structures on, the highway from nine miles east of Kaufman to the Van Zandt County line. When this strip is completed and topped, the highway will furnish a nearer route to Kaufman and give East Texas another route to Dallas. The amount approved for this work was $161,000. Also approved in the meeting was a $36,000 appropriation for placing an asphaltic leveling course on U.S. 80 from the junction of State 64 in Edgewood, a distance of 6.6 miles.

The traffic light at the intersection of U.S. 80 and south Fourth Street, which was damaged by a truck several weeks ago, has been replaced by a new light and is now in operation.

Appointment of a group of Van Zandt County citizens as community chairman for the East Texas Chamber of Commerce has been made by Henry M. Bell of Tyler, president of the regional chamber. This group includes the following, Ben Cox of Canton; Gerald Johnson of Edgewood; W.L. Steed of Van; Clyde Jones of Wills Point and C.A. Mayfield of Grand Saline.

Jack Stembridge received painful second degree burns on his face and hands Tuesday while working on a truck at Rhodes Motor Company. He was working on the carburetor of the truck when it backfired. Gasoline which had been blown on his face and hands ignited and inflicted the burns. He received treatment at Baker Clinic.

 Martha Walker has purchased the West End Café and is continuing to operate under the same name. She has worked at Dot’s Café, Letty’s Café and the Bus Station Café before purchasing her business. Assisting in the operation of the café will be her mother, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Juanita McCracken and Mrs. H.E. Ezell.

Mrs. Lee Eubank attended funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Russell in Dallas Monday afternoon. Mrs. Russell, 85, was the teacher of the Jennie Russell Bible Class at the Colonial Presbyterian church for 55 years. Mrs. Eubank was a member of this class for 22 years. Cradle Roll: Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Shields are the parents of a little son, Thomas Marion, born July 16 at Baker Clinic.  Mr. and Mrs. John R. Martin are the parents of a daughter, Kathryn Ruth born July 17. Mrs. Martin is the former Ruby Cotton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Cotton. A little daughter named Sunday was born July 15, to Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield at Baker Clinic.
