Tiger athletes medal twice at State Track Meet

AUSTIN – The Wills Point track and field team sent three competitors to Austin last week to compete at the 4A UIL State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on May 14-16.

The Tigers performed exceptionally well, bringing home a first, third and fifth place finish as part of the haul.

Shelbi Walser was the highest ranking county finisher in any event, placing first overall in the girls shot put wheelchair division.

Tiger sprinter Michael Hess also returned from the State Meet with a medal, placing third overall in the 100 meter dash.

Norma Cunigan, the third Wills Point athlete to compete, finished 5th overall in the 4A Girls Shot Put.

Wills Point athletes weren’t alone in competing at the State Meet, with two Canton athletes, Canton pole vaulters Colin Millsap and Ana Sharp, and two Edgewood athletes, distance runner Trent Phelps and discus thrower Jackson Tyner, also competing.

Millsap, now a two-time state qualifier, matched his performance from 2014 by finishing fourth overall at the State Meet. Millsap cleared 15’, finishing behind Brandon Bray (17’) and Riley Richards (16’3”), both of China Spring, and Gabe Meruelo of Henderson.

Sharp, a senior this year, finished tied for 8th overall by clearing 9’6” on her best vault. Sydney King of Dalhart won first overall in the 4A Girls Pole Vault, clearing 12’3”.

Millsap and Sharp weren’t the only Van Zandt County athletes in attendance at the meet, with Wills Point sending a contingent of three athletes and Edgewood sending two to compete.

The Edgewood duo of Trent Phelps and Jackson Tyner, both state qualifiers last year, also made return trips to Austin. Phelps competed in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and Jackson Tyner competing in the discus.

Phelps posted a time of 4:31.16 in the 1600, finishing behind Wyatt Kieler of East Bernard (4:26.18), Ryan Flores of Luling (4:27.79), Gustavo Ayala of Cotulla (4:28.11) and Guy Butts of Whitesboro (4:28:70) in a highly competitive event.

Phelps posted a time of 10:04.26 in the 3200, finishing in 8th place overall. Phelps also finished 6th overall in the 1600 meter run, posting a time of 4:37.37.

Tyner’s best throw of 141-06 was good enough for a 7th place finish in the 3A Boys Discus event.
