County players compete at State Tournament

Senior Shelby Pirtle capped her Tiger tennis career with her second appearance at the State Tennis Tournament.

Van Zandt County sent a contingent of 10 players, five from Wills Point (and an alternate), four from Van and one from Martins Mill, to compete at the 2015 UIL State Tennis Tournament in Austin last week.

Results for local players included:

-Florentina Landaverde of Martins Mill competed in the 2A Girls Singles bracket, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Melissa Tye of Chilton in the Quarterfinals. Tye would be knocked out of the tournament in Semifinal round.

-Logan Daniell and Rustin Rankin of Wills Point competed in the 4A Boys Doubles bracket, losing 6-2, 6-3 to Parker Phillips and Sitman Wainwright of Fredericksburg in the Quarterfinals. Phillips and Wainwright lost to Nital Patel and Maxwell Tadvick of Abilene Wylie in the Semifinal round.

-Shelby Pirtle of Wills Point competed in the 4A Girls Singles bracket, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Hannah Boubel of Fredericksburg in the Quarterfinals. Boubel advanced to and won the 2015 4A State Championship.

-Taylor Attaway and Mullika Seekhieo of Van competed in the 4A Girls Doubles bracket, losing 6-4, 7-6(1) to Emly Corn and Ashley Smyser of Abilene Wylie in the Quarterfinals.

-Mariah Maxfield and Courtney Pickett of Van also competed in the 4A Girls Doubles bracket, losing 6-2, 6-0 to Emily Graf and Lauren Stanley of Vernon in the Quarterfinals.

-Kelsey James and Kolton Adams of Wills Point competed in the 4A Mixed Doubles bracket, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Harrison Weddle and Kristin Wood of Bellville in the Quarterfinals.
