Driving two of my munchkins from the church to the local donut shop would have been much simpler if it had happened 50 years ago. They would have just piled into the bed of my truck, sitting down if they didn’t want the wind to mess up their hair (these were 3 and 5-year-old girls). Of course, if they were boys, they’d just brace themselves against the cab and grin into the wind (A few junebugs never hurt anyone!) But those days are gone, and I even know a family who lost a son when he was thrown from a truck bed.

On this trip, my problem was rear-facing car seats – I don’t own any. Having never had a little one (I became dad to a teen in my mid-50s) I’ve never owned a car seat. But the drive between our church and the donut shop is only about a mile, and our Youth Pastor decided that his daughters would be safe enough in my truck cab for that short a trip. I was extremely careful, and we made it there and back without incident – Whew!
