The Wills Point Lady Tigers have been much improved in the 2018-’19 season, putting together competitive efforts on a weekly basis against tough competition. Wills Point faced its biggest test of the year Jan. 4, playing host to the state-ranked Canton Eaglettes in the District 14-4A opener for both schools.

Despite some solid defense early by both schools, Canton would find its offensive touch beginning in the second quarter to pull away for a 46-16 win over the Lady Tigers.

Offense was tough to come by for both sides in the first quarter with Canton taking a slim 7-2 lead after eight minutes of play.

Canton’s Kayden Prox connected on a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter, helping the Eaglettes establish a 19-4 lead entering the half. Angelina Fields and Dawn Smith tied for the team lead in points through two quarters for Wills Point, scoring two points each.

Wills Point could only muster three points in the third quarter, including two on a Angelina Fields field goal and one on a Kinley Collins free throw.

On the other end of the court, Hannah Manry scored five points, Kayden Prox and Ashley Wood four each and Olivia Norrell three to push the Canton lead to 37-7 with just eight minutes to play.

The Lady Tigers continued to battle down the stretch against Canton, getting a pair of three-pointers from Addison Prather and one from Angelina Fields for their best offensive quarter of the night.

Leading scorers for the Eaglettes included Hannah Manry with 13, Ashley Wood and Kayden Prox with 10 each, Olivia Norrell with eight, Kyndall Nilius and Mattie Tullos with two each, and Chelsey Dollgener with one.

The Eaglettes were scheduled to host Brownsboro Jan. 8 before hitting the road to take on the Mabank Lady Panthers Jan. 11. Canton will wrap up the first round of District 14-4A play with a home date against Van Jan. 15 and a road trip to Athens Jan. 18.

Angelina Fields paced Wills Point with seven points, followed by Addison Prather with six, Dawn Smith with two and Kinley Collins with one.

The Lady Tigers were scheduled to host Athens Jan. 8 before traveling to take on the Brownsboro Bearettes tonight (Jan. 11). Other upcoming games will include a home date against Mabank Jan. 15 and a trip to Van Jan. 18.
